Downer condemns Mugabe
Australia's Foreign Affairs minister, Alexander Downer has condemned the violence in Zimbabwe on Sunday which saw leaders of Zimbabwe's main opposition party beaten and arrested by riot police but it is believed that severe beatings have left one of the leaders of the Movement for Democratic change needing surgery to fix wounds to his face. Around 140 people are in jail after the crackdown on anti government protests was ordered by President, Robert Mugabe who said that the protesters were in breach of a three month ban on political activism (When has there not been a ban on political activism in Zimbabwe?)
Mr Downer called on the government to release the activists from jail and implement economic and social reforms. Mugabe has ruled Zimbabwe for well over 27 years and it is suggested that because of factors like the state of the Zimbabwe economy that Mugabe and the ZANU - PF are losing grip on the nation
Zimbabwe currently has the highest inflation rate of any country in the world (it's currently in the 1700% range) and most essentials have become unaffordable and forcing many families not to send their children to school. Mugabe blames Western countries for Zimbabwe's failure but critics say it is the fault of Mugabe and his government for putting in place policies that have reduced Zimbabwe to being nothing more then a basket case.
The frightening tyranny of Robert Mugabe's regime must come to an immediate end. It is time for Mugabe to announce that he will retire and not run in elections planned for 2008
