Current Affairs - The opinions of a grumpy old pouf

Doug Pollard is a veteran gay journalist, columnist, commentator, and broadcaster specialising in GLBTI issues, based in Melbourne Australia. He often works with Rob Mitchell of the RJM Trust, "We are separate independent and unaffiliated guerilla campaigners and advocates, and the best of mates: nimble, fast-moving, unconventional and above all aiming to drive rapid change", he says.

The Discriminators

THE DISCRIMINATORS
God Squad Hijack State Government
'Religious' to get special rights and privileges

Ted Baillieu
Premier Ted Baillieu - indifferent to 'religious' takeover?

Robert Clark
Attorney General Robert Clark - a 'religious' rat in the ranks?

On the pretext of 'balancing rights', Clark wants to restore a law that allows religious-owned businesses and organisations - not just churches, mosques and synagogues, but religious-run hospitals, clinics, welfare and job agencies, care homes, even breakfast cereal companies - to refuse to employ gays and lesbians, single mums, and people of other faiths, or to sack them if they already employ them, even if they're only there to weed the garden or clean the toilets.

For no reason, Without penalty.

Premier Ted Baillieu appears indifferent to the matter.

The same law allows religious-run businesses receiving government money - for example, aged-care homes, or employment agencies - to refuse to help gays, lesbians, single mums and people of other faiths.

The Brumby government cleaned up this archaic nonsense: now the god-squad who have such a stranglehold on the Baillieu government are bringing it back.

These are the same people who are using our taxes prop up the evangelical Anglican Access Ministries, paying for them to 'evangelise' - but not 'prosyletise' - our children in state schools.

It is WRONG to subsidise one extremist branch of one faith.

It is WRONG to write discrimination into law.

The restoration of religious discrimination rights in the Human Rights & Equal Opportunity Act will come before Parliament next week.

Act now: tell Victorian Premier Ted Baillieu and Attorney Genera Robert Clark that you oppose making it legal to discriminate against us.

Gay or straight, single or married, this is BAD LAW for everyone. Write to <ted.baillieu@parliament.vic. gov.au>, <robert.clark@parliament.vic. gov.au>

And write to your local MP, and your local paper.

Thank you.
