Please Support Equality: You are NOT GloriaJeans

WOO_HOO!
STARBUCKS SUPPORTS MARRIAGE EQUALITY!

Starbucks have posted a reply on their Facebook page:

"Core to who we are and what we value as a company is our belief in equal treatment of our partners (employees) and our customers. It is with this in mind that Starbucks Australia would like to publicly announce our proud support of Marriage Equality for all. Many of our stores and partners are actively participating in events and activities aimed at changing local legislation - together we can make a difference."

Thank you Starbucks - now how about a few of those star bucks for Australian Marriage Equality??

GLORIAJEANS BOYCOTT
You may or may not be aware of the swelling campaign to boycott your rivals, GloriaJeans, over their donations to the Australian Christian Lobby and other extremist evangelical groups with a remarkable anti-gay obsession Really Long Link For example, they gave the ACL $30,000 for political campaigning.

I first raised the subject in my own blog Really Long Link and I am continuing to investigate

exactly where the support for this frightening organisation is coming from. Sources within the ACL confirm that the organisation is "rolling in cash", and they are planning a major anti-gay TV campaign.

The GloriaJeans links are all detailed in a fine piece of work by journalist Chrys Stevenson Really Long Link

On Facebook, Twitter and the blogosphere, GloriaJeans behaviour is being contrasted with the behaviour of Starbucks in the USA.

STARBUCKS USA SUPPORTS GAY MARRIAGE
Starbucks publicly supported a gay marriage bill passed by the Washington state legislature this year.

Company management then sent a letter to employees saying the legislation, "aligned with Starbucks business practices and upholds our belief in the equal treatment of partners. It is core to who we are and what we value as a company."

US gay rights groups have since commended Starbucks for its support.

STARBUCKS OZ, WILL YOU SUPPORT US?
This is an outstanding opportunity for Starbucks Australia to take a stand on the values for which your company is famous around the globe. A stand which aligns with the values of your company and core customers. A stand for the core Australian value of 'a fair go.'

Will you make a public statement in support of marriage equality? Will you make a matching donation of $30,000 to the Australian Marriage Equality Really Long Link lobby group to help counter the tsunami of lies coming from the ACL?

Please, help make a positive difference.

Good thinking Doug! This would be a brilliant piece of marketing for Starbucks. In fact, in researching my latest piece on Gloria Jeans - Really Long Link - I came across a rather interesting piece of information.

Gloria Jeans sponsor Compassion Australia. Compassion Australia is headed by Tim Hanna, formerly head of the Australian branch of the evangelical ministry Willow Creek. Each year, Willow Creek holds a Leadership Summit in the US.

Last year, Starbucks Chairman and CEO, Howard Schultz was supposed to speak at the summit but withdrew from speaking at the Willow Creek Leadership Summit due to the church's "history [of] anti-gay persecution."

Funny that anti-gay Gloria Jeans should be sponsoring an organisation run by a former CEO of a church that Starbucks won't associate with!

It's a small world, isn't it?

It would be absolute gold for them and they'd be fools to pass up the opportunity, frankly. Corporate Australia have been total laggards in this: the other side have amassed lots of rich business contacts and sponsors: time we started doing the same.
