RAINBOW REPORT ON MOTIVATION
Some people are just happily making their way through life when – wham – something happens and you just HAVE to do something about it. We heard about it last week, from a woman who took her own experience of being bullied and was motivated to create a tool to combat it.
And we heard it from one of the founders of Wear it Purple Day.
Which is Friday, incidentally – will you be wearing purple to show your support for Rainbow Kids? www.wearitpurple.org
Something jolts you out of your rut and you’re seized with a need to DO SOMETHING!
It was Bob Katter calling for the idea of gay marriage to be laughed at that motivated his half-brother, Carl, to step out publicly and disagree. Why now? And how has it affected his life? Carl joins us in the studio to tell us about it.
Bob Katter moved someone else to act, too. James Newburrie, in Mount Isa, is organising the first Equal Love rally in Mount Isa and he’s staging it literally on Bob ’s doorstep – right outside his Mount Isa office. Really Long Link
LATEST: Mt Isa councillor Robbie Katter may be stepping in to the family tussle over marriage equality, as the council rebuffs James's application.
Openly gay comedian Joel Creasey was threatened with being gay-bashed by a group of around 20 teenagers while leaving an anti-discrimination event in Colac: the local Mayor tried to swepp the incident under the carpet, saying “I don’t believe [homophobia] is any worse than anywhere else and in fact I’ll go to great lengths to defend the youth of Colac.” Really Long Link
That motivated Greg Adkins of the Anti-Violence Project to contact me, wanting to tell the full story. And it ain’t like the mayor tells it!
And finally, after Wear It Purple – your ARE wearing purple tomorrow, aren’t you? – comes RU?OK. www.ruokday.com.au
VicBears is planning to start some life-changing conversations this September 15, RU?OK Day, hosting a discussion evening on mental wellbeing and how to look after your mates. Committeeman Jack Chapman joins us to explain why.
