The Prime Minister, John Howard has defended an attack he made on US President hopeful, the Democrats, Barack Obama over his policy on American troops in Iraq, Obama has made no secret of the fact that he would withdraw American troops from Iraq but Prime Minister Howard said in a recent TV interview that Obama's polciy would destabilise the entire MIddle East and would have Al Qaeda in Iraq praying for an Obama win in the 2008 presidental election, however, Obama hit back saying that Mr Howard's comments were bizarre considering that Australia only has 1400 troops in Iraq compared to how many the Americans have and then said that Mr Howard should contribute more Australian troops to the war in Iraq so that American troops can go home.
Mr Howard has been roundly criticised not just in America but in Australia with the Opposition saying the comments were irresponsible and put Australia's relationship with the USA under threat should Obama win office but Mr Howard has said that the Labor Party are being hypocritical on the issue and are swinging one way or the other unless they agree with Obama's stance on Iraq.
