Yes, this is NOT just a US problem: 'reparative' therapy is practiced here in Australia too. The problem is, it doesn't work. Because it tries to fix something that isn't broken in the first place. There is not one shred of evidence to show that it works.
THE 'COUNSELLING' SCAM
"Reparative therapy", is usually disguised in Australia as 'counselling' to avoid scrutiny and regulation.
But the history of this vicious lie is littered with depression, destruction of families, and deaths. Far from repairing anything, it destroys.
Deep depression is induced by these 'counsellors' by brainwashing their victims into believing they are sinful, perverted and abnormal and need to be "converted" into heterosexuals.
And when they inevitably fail (because what they are attempting is impossible), telling them it is their own fault for not trying hard enough. It can drive a person to suicide.
FAILURE IS GUARANTEED
Let me be clear: it is incontrovertibly proven fact that you cannot remove homosexual desires and replace them with heterosexual ones. You can only suppress them, with lasting psychological damage. The only people who have any 'choice' are those with an underlying bisexual orientation. Anyone who tells you different is a liar.
Time after time after time, so called "ex-gay" star patients have eventually been found out, or have admitted it was all wishful thinking. Many, like Paul Martin and Anthony Venn-Brown here in Australia now actively campaign against this vicious practice.
FAMILIES DESTROYED
It's not just the 'patient' who is crushed. Family members are also damaged:

SHUT THEM DOWN
Parents & Friends of Ex-Gays (PFOX) - a fundamentalist Christian front group set up to counter Parents & Friends of Lesbians & Gays (PFLAG) - helpfully lists the following reparative therapy centres in Australia.
We need to restrict and control this evil, as they are moving to do in California Really Long Link .
We should go further: it is time to make it illegal and close these places down. Parents who subject their children to this torture should be charged with child abuse.

"In the following transcript of Wallace’s presentation at the conference, he makes it very clear how he deals with a young gay person who has just come out.
“I’m dealing with a young fellow who’s only in the last couple of weeks has gone and told his parents he’s gay. It has destroyed his family. It has destroyed this fellow’s relationship with Christ. And it’s because this 39 year old seduced a young 18 year old at university in his first year …”
Later in his speech, Wallace elaborates on this relationship:
“… let me tell you that only in the last week I’ve had a conversation with a young fellow I’m mentoring you know, who’s ‘cause I’ve encouraged him. I know that the only way that people can be brought out of homosexuality is through Christ, it’s not by my argument, you know. If you read the books of people who’ve talked about coming out [he means becoming ex-gay], you know, it’s only ever people have said to them, people have tried to argue with them – you can’t – because for a start, the people who’ve called them into it have all the arguments and counter arguments they fill their heads with and so you’ll never beat those down. The only thing that will bring them out of it is a closer relationship with Christ – as Christ reveals to them, you know, that it’s sin.”
Then he goes on to compare homosexuality to kleptomania:
“But what I’d say to you is this. That whatever the struggle, it’s no different really than someone who might be struggling with pornography – and for them it’s a real struggle you know, they just can’t go to the TV without opening it up.
It might be that they’re struggling with something else, you know. Some people are kleptomaniacs and must have a real struggle when they see something they really want and want to grab it. All of these things are sin because of the fallen nature state of our world, you know? "
