Girl Band Research Not Surprising
I am not going to stay on here long but apparently researchers have done some research into something I think we all knew: Just by watching girl bands like Pussycat Dolls and Girls Aloud strike provocative moves during their music videos for about 10 minutes or more can damage a teenage girl's confidence in their own body image with music video clips being as equally detrimental as DOLLY magazine or a seeing models on a catwork who have been on a diet of one lettuce leave a day. Researchers say that these music videos by bands such as the Pussycat Dolls are now the new "mega force" driving a new generation of teenage girls obsessed with their weight.
According to research from Sussex University which involved girls aged 16 to 18 were separated into three groups and asked to do different thing such as watch music videos,or listen to music without the video or memorise a bunch of neutral words, researchers then interviewed the girls to get a guide on their self esteem, body satisfaction and mood, it was then revealed that the girls who had watched the music videos had exhibited the greatest increase in poor body image compared to the others who did the other things.
Doctor Amanda Jordan says that girl bands come to her attention when reality show popstar group, Bardot broke through for success in Australia. "Once they became pop stars, they all suddenly shrank - and they became successful, I saw a direct filter through in our clinical practice. It's also reinforcing the very narrowest definition of thin equals beautiful which equals success.''
Dr Jordan has also said that to many girls these extremely skinny girl bands reinforced the thought in many young girls minds that you have be extremely skinny in order to become famous and that female celebrities need to be more aware of the impact they made on young girls. "Music videos of girl bands have a big impact. They are very much telling girls that success comes to those who are skinny,'' she said.
Music videos were much more accessible then images of models on a catwalk or in a magazine and the fact that these images were moving made it a more powerful impact.
Beth Ditto, the lead singer of a new band called The Gossip and the new leader of the anti skinny movement, has been very outspoken on the issue of teenage body image, the rocker hit out at extremely skinny female celebrities such as Victoria Beckham and Paris Hilton, saying that they were sending a negative impression about body image to girls and blamed the media for being caught up in all the hype affecting women's self esteem.
I think that this research is not surprise, it's been known for ages that girl bands like the Pussycat Dolls do untold damage to a girl's confidence and body image, however it's not limited to just girl bands, it's people like Lindsay Lohan, the Olsen twins and all those other young celebrites who have had recent issues who send a bad example to young girls, however I also think that parents have a part to play in all of this by either turning off these music videos or sitting down, watching them with their children and saying "These girls are not a healthy way to look, you are fine just the way you are". We also need TV stations to get back to certain standards when it comes to music videos and showing the likes of plain old boring Victoria Beckham and Paris Hilton on TV,
What are your thoughts?
Anyway thats all for now so tata cyaz
