Freshly Doug Thursday October 1

Freshly dug garlic
Freshly Doug's garlic - a cure for superstitions

On air from Nine to Noon every Thursday, Freshly Doug brings you news and current affairs with a queer slant.

MIKE KENNEDY

As always between 10 and 11 I spend an hour with someone special and today’s guest is a voice that’s very familiar to Joy listeners, usually talking about AIDS-related issues. But today we’ll have get to know a bit about the person behind the mask, as we chat with VAC chief Mike Kennedy.

IN DEPTH LOOK AT RELIGIOUS EXEMPTIONS

In the wake of the massive Grand Final coverage – sorry Nick, if you need a hand to get over the disappointment, you know my number – Attorney General Rob Hulls slipped out the announcement of a compromise on the religious exemptions to the Equal Opportunity Bill.

Religious institutions will continue to be allowed to discriminate against us for being unmarried, childless, or not straight. I thought this was worth looking into in some detail, so this morning I have with me Greens spokesperson Kathleen Maltzahn, who opposes the changes, Helen Szoke, the head of the Victorian Human Rights Commission, who thinks they’re a balanced compromise, and after 11, lawyer Kristina Antoniades, who will try to give us some idea of how the changes might work in practice.

THE REGULARS

Our Mayor today is Michael Clarke from Maribyrnong, and we’ll have our usual conversations with Will Conyers, man of the theatre, and Kate from the Green Renters.

FAREWELL TO HARLEY DENNETT

But first we farewell Harley Dennett. He's leaving Australia, heading for Washington DC, which should make for some interesting reports in future. But in a moment he joins for the last time from Canberra with a final parcel of Australian news.

If you want to wish him well, thank him for all his reporting in the paper and here on air, or ask him a question, or join in any part of the show, 0427 JOY 949. You can also Twitter @freshlydoug.
