Current Affairs - The opinions of a grumpy old pouf

Doug Pollard is a veteran gay journalist, columnist, commentator, and broadcaster specialising in GLBTI issues, based in Melbourne Australia. He often works with Rob Mitchell of the RJM Trust, "We are separate independent and unaffiliated guerilla campaigners and advocates, and the best of mates: nimble, fast-moving, unconventional and above all aiming to drive rapid change", he says.

FRESHLY DOUG THURSDAY JULY 29

Gillard Wong
Spot the difference between these two women - yes, the one on the left can get married.

The Wong affair, Digging Deeper in Tasmania, gay on the Gold Coast,a secular candidate in Melbourne Ports, a rural get-together, and a Green Senator, all on Freshly Doug today.

PENNY ANTI?

Well we can hardly let the week go by without looking at the Penny Wong story, which generated a great deal of heat and led a lot of people to decide to give up on the Labor party in disgust.

Senator Wong made the mistake of parotting the excuses of the religious right when she stated her opposition to equal marriage, appealing to history, religion, tradition etc. She didn’t respond to requests for an interview.

In fact, neither Labor nor Liberal will commit to providing a national spokesperson at any time during the campaign, including Julia Gillard, Tony Abbott, senior ministers and their shadows. If this changes you can be sure I’ll let you know.

Labor diehards were furious, claiming Wong's critics were racist, sexsit, any old-ist that came to hand. Lobby group Australian Marriage Equality came in for particularly vitriolic attack, as we will hear from convenor Alex Greenwich.

RODNEY CROOME

Even my special guest on Digging Deeper today, Rodney Croome, one of the fathers of gay activism in Australia, didn’t escape unscathed.

GREEN SENATOR

The Greens are of course only too happy to put up national figureheads to speak direct to the GLBTI community, and one of Ms Wongs fellow Senators, Sarah Hanson-Young from the Greens Party, joins us in the studio today.

SECULARITY

But the Greens are not the only alternative to the majors, although they are the only ones with a chance of claiming the balance of power. There’s a whole raft of smaller parties putting up candidates, including the Secular Party, and their candidate in Michael Danby’s seat of Melbourne Ports also joins us today.

OUT THERE IN THE COUNTRY

And we have news of an upcoming forum called ‘Take Care Out There’ for all who care about improving the health and wellbeing of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) people who live work or play in rural, regional and remote communities.

BLING & GAY

Daniel Witthaus reports in from his tour challenging homophobia in rural and regional Australia, as he gives us a glimpse of gay life on the Gold Coast.

Dear Doug,
By your comments you would appear to be in the anti-Penny camp. Her comments sounded to me as if she is "fighting the fight" and is a very persistent woman. Perhaps you would prefer Mr Abbott developing the policy on gay marriage? The anti-Penny has also been using the c-word to describe her, I noticed tonight on YouTube. I must say Doug, as a re-activist, you certainly are not too fussy about the company you keep. Nice one.

What a silly comment. In the first place you make assumptions not supported by anything I have written here, which is just a pre-sell for tomorrow's show and not an op-ed.

In the second place, while I'm happy to take responsibility for my own words, what on earth has a nasty word used by an unidentified third party on some other site got to do with me?

Well you can act like a silly man sometimes Doug. Or at least speak and write like one. Firstly, analyse feedback. Secondly, examine your position and words chosen. Thirdly, read alternate media. In fact read Chris Hedges. Fourthly, develop your craft. Fifthly, accept you annoy people with your at times rambling bile. Finally, just keeping it real Doug. How funny to see reactivity in those dishing it out.
