Freshly Doug August 26
Slight legal flavour this week, with a retired high court judge, military rules in the US, law for gay dads, and the prospects for law reform after our rather peculiar election.
COMPASSIONATE JUDGE
On Digging Deeper this week, a very special guest indeed, the former chief justice of the Family Court, the Honourable Alastair Nicholson AO.
Perhaps best known for his championing of the rights of the child, he made the decision to allow 'Alex' to go on hormone medication to suppress her development as a female from the age of 13.
He found that if hormone treatment were not permitted, Alex was at risk of depression and self-harm and would be ill at ease with her body and self-image through her teenage years.
The distinguished former judge joins me between 10 and 11.
DON'T ASK DON'T TELL JUST ASK THE WIFE
While we’ve been having an election here, over in the US the military have been sending out questionnaires to work out exactly how to abolish Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. Washington correspondent Harley Dennett – himself a military spouse – has the story.
ASSESSING THE FALLOUT
And after a long absence touring the globe, Corey Irlam returns to us with his thoughts on the pitfalls and opportunities of the current political situation.
Andrew Potts has all the news from Sydney, Kristina Antoniades looks at the law for gay dads, and we’ll start at usual with the latest report from Daniel Witthaus on his tour challenging homophobia in rural and regional Australia
