David Graham"
After the good news on GLBTI mental health, a setback. Homophobia rears its head in Darwin. What next for law reform now the government has gone cold on anti-discrimination? More progress on tackling sporting homophobia. How trans kids fare in the Family Court. And the rest, from 9 - Noon Thursday 20th May.
Two steps forward, one back
Last week we had good news on the youth mental health front, with headspace welcoming an additional $78.8 million from the government that will deliver up to 30 new headspace centres.
But what the government gives, they also take away, with the announcement by Health Minister Nicola Roxon that mental health Medicare rebates will in future not include social workers and occupational therapists, a change headspace says deals a blow to its ability to deliver it’s services.
We talk to Kirsten Cleland, Southern Melbourne headspace manager to find out what this means. Really Long Link
Homophobic tropical nights
Daniel Witthaus’s tour challenging homophobia in rural and regional Australia has reached Darwin, where he catches up with his former partner and finds the pace of life a bit slower than he’s used to, but somehow seductive. And experiences homophobia first hand.
Reform stalled?
Corey Irlam from the Australian Coalition for Equality joins me in the studio to bring us up to date on the world of politics, where to now for the Equal Love, how do we get the government to commit to anti-discrimination reform, and more. Really Long Link
Come Out & Play
An Australian-first today as a report about the experiences of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) people who participate in sport will be launched in Melbourne this afternoon. The reports author Dr Caroline Symonds joins us later.
An Actor’s Life
Daniel Scott is my special guest this week on Digging Deeper. He was Felicia in Priscilla and he’s currently starring in Jersey Boys. You may remember when he was bashed at Hungry Jacks back in July, just across from the Joy studios. But Daniel is used to handling tough times, starting when he ran away from his abusive family at 13 and lived on the streets. Hear Daniel’s story at 10.
Trans kids
You’ve seen the tabloid headlines such “Court gives teen the right to sex-change op”, and the resultant fuss. But how does the family court approach cases of children with gender dysphoria – transsexual children, as one might say? We explore with Sally Nicholes, from Nicholes Family Law. http://www.nicholeslaw.com.au/
The Regulars
And the regulars return. Andrew Potts joins us with the latest news from Sydney Star Observer http://www.starobserver.com.au , and Will Conyers is back with more gems from theatreland Really Long Link
