FRESHLY DOUG IDAHO SPECIAL THURS MAY 13
IDAHO SPECIAL
A very special show this week, as we approach the rally for Equal Marriage at the State Library on Saturday and the International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) on Monday, with a host of activities Really Long Link .
BEATING HOMOPHOBIA
Between nine and ten we’ll be looking at how homophobia, depression and self harm, and sport intersect, with a studio panel comprising
Chris Tanti, the CEO of headspace http://www.headspace.org.au/
headspace is Australia’s National Youth Mental Health Foundation, and has just received an additional $78.8 million in the Federal budget that will deliver up to 30 new headspace centres and provide extra funding for the existing 30 headspacesites. This will help a further 20,000 young people with mental health problems each year.
Rob Mitchell, founder of the RJM Trust http://www.rjm.org/ and member of the ministerial advisory committee on sport.
Rob has been the driving force behind the AFL’s embrace of anti-homophobia initiatives and the new government guidelines for Victorian sporting clubs, with their enforceable anti-discrimination rules.
Greg Adkins, of the Anti-Violence Project http://antiviolence.info/
Greg leads the AVP and is also a major force in the events of IDAHO in Melbourne, as well as being active within the Victorian Rainbow Labor caucus.
Daniel Witthaus’s tour challenging homophobia in rural and regional Australia reached Wyndham (near Kununurra, wherever that is) – if Daniel is in range he’ll join us on the line.
DIGGING DEEPER IN THE AFL
Everyone got a surprise a couple of weeks ago when a bunch of AFL football players came out in support of IDAHO. This initiative came, not from the AFL hierarchy, nor from the clubs, but the AFL Players Association.
Dr Pippa Grange is General Manager - Culture & Leadership at the AFLPA, and she is my special guest this week on Digging Deeper. She talks about her life, work, and her role in the AFL players embrace of the anti-homophobia initiative.
BITING THE HAND
The GLBTI community’s increasing frustration with Labor over their refusal to progress any further towards equality for our community boiled over, with supporters and activists alike furious at the government omitting any mention of sexual orientation and gender identity in its announcement of reforms to anti-discrimination law.
Alex Greenwich of Australian Marriage Equality explains why the organisation will leaflet Tanya Plibersek’s Sydney constituency urging people NOT to vote Labor at the general election. And who else they have in their sights.
FAMILY COURT AND TRANS KIDS
Transphobia is even more intractable than homophobia. In 2008 there was a tremendous outcry when the Family Court allowed a girl of 12 to begin hormone treatment to suppress puberty, with a view to later gender reassignment.
Sally Nicholes, senior partner at Nicholes Family Lawyers, looks at the way the Family Court handles cases of children with gender identity dysphoria.
RALLY FOR EQUAL MARRIAGE & CELEBRATE IDAHO
Sir Ian McKellen and the entire cast of Waiting for Godot, Sen. Sarah Hanson Young, Education Minister Bronwyn Pike and more will address this weekends rally for same-sex marriage. And yours truly will be your MC.
Organiser Ali Hogg joins us with the latest update.
Saturday, Rally 1pm, State Library, cnr Swanston / La Trobe St in Melbourne CBD Really Long Link
