Current Affairs - The opinions of a grumpy old pouf

Doug Pollard is a veteran gay journalist, columnist, commentator, and broadcaster specialising in GLBTI issues, based in Melbourne Australia. He often works with Rob Mitchell of the RJM Trust, "We are separate independent and unaffiliated guerilla campaigners and advocates, and the best of mates: nimble, fast-moving, unconventional and above all aiming to drive rapid change", he says.

Podcasts
Podcasts of parts of this weeks show are now available online Really Long Link - the interviews with Judith Comfort and Joseph Chetcuti as well as the live cross to the Marriage Breakfast.

Soon we hope to be able to podcast more of the show.

Saint Gay
Joseph came up with some surprising information from his book, Queer Mediterranean Memories. He identifies Maltas only saint, George Preca, as gay, and says his experiences training for the priesthood convince him that 60-80% of all catholic clergy are gay.

The book is available from Hares & Hyenas and at http://www.queermalta.com

Canberra Protest
High drama this week as we broke into the program to cross live to the National Heterosexual Christians Only Marriage Breakfast in Canberra, where two gay activists, John Kloprogge and John Davey, were ejected from Parliament House for their silent protest in favour of equal marriage.

“Kloppy” is 25 but with his angelic blond looks he could pass for an innocent schoolboy – until you get to know him. This must have confused Senator Bill Heffernan, who seemed to think Kloppy was a bit young to be risking the dangers of anal sex!!

May the Best Person Win
But sometimes it’s the things that happen when the mikes are off that make the day. Tim Wilson from the Institute of Public Affairs had just finished talking about his idea for a competitive marketplace for marriage contracts.

As he was leaving the studio he encountered Melbourne’s Deputy Lord Mayor Susan Riley arriving for her spot. Tim stood against Susan for the post of Deputy Mayor at the last election.

As Susan settled into her seat she asked, “Who was that?”

I explained that he had been one of her opponents at the last election: “If his team had won, he’d have had your job,” I explained.

“Well,” she replied, “then the best woman won!”

I must remember to tell Tim – sometime . . . . .
