Current Affairs - The opinions of a grumpy old pouf

Doug Pollard is a veteran gay journalist, columnist, commentator, and broadcaster specialising in GLBTI issues, based in Melbourne Australia. He often works with Rob Mitchell of the RJM Trust, "We are separate independent and unaffiliated guerilla campaigners and advocates, and the best of mates: nimble, fast-moving, unconventional and above all aiming to drive rapid change", he says.

This week Corey Irlam provides some analysis on a couple of issues: the Human Rights Consultation report, what’s likely to happen next, and when; and as the Senate Marriage Enquiry gears up for hearings here in Melbourne on November 9, is this process going to gain us anything, and how we can help it along.

SMS 0427 JOY 949, 0427 JOY 949, or Twitter @freshlydoug, to join in the discussion.

On the subject of relationship recognition, you may remember that before there was a state relationship register, there was a City of Melbourne one – and the council have decided to continue it. Deputy Lord Mayor Susan Riley explains why.

There must be some sort or virus going round. Those who catch it are usually busy amending their Equal Opportunity Acts at the time, and it has the effect of making demands by the Roman Church to be allowed to continue to discriminate seem reasonable.

Last week we heard how the Victorian Attorney General Rob Hulls had come down with a nasty case of catholitis. As a result religious institutions and their affiliated businesses and organisations will still be able to refuse to employ or serve, for example, gays, lesbians and transgender folk.

Now a new strain of catholitis has popped up in Tasmania, with proposed changes to the regulations under their Equal Opportunities Act inexplicably favouring the Catholic Church. Martine Delaney has the details.

As always between 10 and 11 I spend an hour with someone special and today’s guest is someone regular Joy listeners will know well, Lyn Morgain, who tomorrow departs the ALSO Foundation.

Last week we said hello to Andrew Potts from the Sydney Star Observer, whom we’ll meet again in the final hour of the show with more news from north of the border.

Plus our usual look at the world of theatre with Will Conyers and more news on how to be a greener tenant from Chris the Green Renter.

As always, feel free to join in, 0427 JOY 949. SMS 0427 JOY 949. You can also Twitter @freshlydoug.
