Current Affairs - The opinions of a grumpy old pouf

Doug Pollard is a veteran gay journalist, columnist, commentator, and broadcaster specialising in GLBTI issues, based in Melbourne Australia. He often works with Rob Mitchell of the RJM Trust, "We are separate independent and unaffiliated guerilla campaigners and advocates, and the best of mates: nimble, fast-moving, unconventional and above all aiming to drive rapid change", he says.

Fiona Patten - out to pinch Costello's seat

Well, Peter Costello has gone, Brendan Nelson has gone, there are byelections coming up in Bradfield and Higgins. The Labor Party aren’t standing in either because they are of course solid Liberal seats. But just how solid, I wonder?

The Greens have selected a strong performer in Clive Hamilton for Higgins, but he’ll be facing tough competition from one of my guests – Fiona Patten. Former sex-worker and now leader of the Australian Sex Party, she’s a savvy lady and who knows, with Dr Hamilton being somewhat of a social conservative, she may well pick up a lot of votes that might therwise have fallen his way.

Tasmania has long been in the forefront of gay rights legislation, and recent news that lesbian mums were going to be retrospectively recognised in law – and that the change would be backdated six years – only confirmed their position. Rodney Croome brings us up to date on that and other Tassie matters.

Rodney was also at the recent Senate hearing on same sex marriage here in Melbourne (Transcript now online at Really Long Link
, and so was Ali Hogg from Equal Love. We’ll hear how plans are progressing for their rally on 28th of this month.

As always between 10 and 11 I spend an hour with someone special. Today’s guest is rapidly becoming something of a powerhouse in the community. He’s been General Manager of Midsumma for the last year or two, and this year he has added ChillOut to his stable of events. Adam Lowe joins me at 10.

Andrew Potts from the Sydney Star Observer looks at a reported 14% surge in homophobic violence across the UK this year, and the plans to raise the issue of GLBT equality with state and federal politicians at the Annual Conference of the Labor Party in NSW.

Plus our usual visit to the world of theatre with Will Conyers.

Plus something a bit different for our Green segment – a green auditor explains how he can assess your home and recommend ways of living greener and reducing your environmental impact.

As always, feel free to join in, SMS 0427 JOY 949 during the show. You can also Twitter @freshlydoug.
