FRESHLY DOUG THURSDAY DEC 10 2009
Jews and Catholics, Nuns and a Sex Worker, it's a lively show with a moral flavour today!
It’s crunch day for ACT Civil Partnerships – will the Greens accept the changes the Federal government wants, which would make CPs less marriage like (while still not satisfying the Christian Lobby), or will they vote them down, forcing Kevin Rudd to veto them altogether?
John Klopprogge from the Canberra branch of Australian Marriage Equality – you may remember him as one of the two men who staged a silent protest during the Christian Lobby’s Marriage breakfast – brings us up to date.
At the rededication of Perth Cathedral there were rather more nuns than Cardinal Pell expected, some of them in very colourful habits, releasing helium filled condoms. The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence join us this morning to explain what happened, and why they were there.
Wednesday state attorney general Rob Hulls appointed retired Supreme Court judge Geoff Eames to review existing laws to see if they adequately deal with offenses motivated by hatred or prejudice. Greg Adkins of the Anti Violence welcomed the move, and joins us to explain why it’s important.
As always between 10 and 11 I spend an hour with someone special. Today’s guest is Fiona Patten, who runs Australian Sex Party and has just had her first crack at standing for election in Peter Costellos old seat of Higgins.
Scott Abrahams Editor of the Southern Star and Sydney Star Observer will drop by to celebrate the 1000th edition of the Sydney paper, and we’ll take our regular look at the world of theatre with Will Conyers.
Michael Barnett of the Jewish gay group Aleph has been trying to get the support of the Jewish Community Council of Victoria to combat the homophobia of the Orthodox Jewish Community, but things haven’t been going too well.
So this week we’re joined live in the studio by John Searle, the head of the Jewish Community Council , the peak body representing all Victorian Jewry – Orthodox, Reform and Progressive – to talk about the Jewish community’s efforts to combat homophobia.
As always, feel free to join in during the show, 0427 JOY 949. SMS 0427 569 949. You can also Twitter @freshlydoug with any questions, comment.
