Marriage Matters – Rudd ignores conference
The Rudd administration will ignore the cosmetic changes made to the equal marriage policy at the recent Labor conference and stick with the existing failed policy of state-based relationship registers and the definition of marriage as one-man-one-woman. Attorney-General Robert McClelland is also formulating a fallback policy that claims he couldn’t legalise gay marriage even if he wanted to without a constitutional amendment. Harley Dennett has the details.

The Senate Enquiry into the MARRIAGE EQUALITY BILL closes to submissions Friday, so get writing! Details here Really Long Link and here Really Long Link

‘War on Drugs’ hypocritical and counterproductive
Party drugs have been blamed by some for fuelling unsafe sex, but Kane Race from the University of Sydney says they had a positive effect: they helped create the sense of community that marked the gay community’s efforts to combat AIDS. He also thinks the ‘war on drugs’ is at best hypocritical and at worst, counterproductive.

Pleasure Consuming Medicine: The Queer Politics of Drugs, by Kane Race. $22.95 paperback ISBN 978-0-8223-4501-5 $79.95 library cloth ISBN 978-0-8223-4488-9 Duke University Press

My special guest this week is Rob Mitchell, who appeared out of nowhere just a couple of years ago and has since had a major impact, driving change into Victorian football culture right up to AFL level, and now tackling the neglect of our community by the self-styled ‘national depression initiative’. He joins me at ten.
