Current Affairs - The opinions of a grumpy old pouf

Doug Pollard is a veteran gay journalist, columnist, commentator, and broadcaster specialising in GLBTI issues, based in Melbourne Australia. He often works with Rob Mitchell of the RJM Trust, "We are separate independent and unaffiliated guerilla campaigners and advocates, and the best of mates: nimble, fast-moving, unconventional and above all aiming to drive rapid change", he says.

Marriage Breakfast - what really happened

Last week we heard of two activists who were unceremonously bundled off the stage at the Christian lobby’s National Marriage Breakfast in Canberra.

The two men were John Kloprogge & John Davey, and they join us to give their account of what happened, both then, and later, when they had a close encounter with Senator Bill Heffernan.

I’ve invited Senator Heffernan to drop by as well, but he isn’t keen.

Changing Anglican Attitudes
The Anglican Church is America – known there as Episcopalian – has been going through agonies over the ordination of gay priests and bishops. Here in Australia things have been much more low key, but that doesn’t mean nothing is happening . Susan Southall of the Australian Anglican pressure group Changing Attitudes will bring us up to date.

Moving Port Philip Forward
The City of Port Philip – home of Pride March - has been in the news again lately, with a none-too-flattering report from the Ombudsman. And then there was all that fuss over the Triangle. Mayor Frank O’Connor is in the studio to talk about how the city is recovering and moving into the future.

Digging Deeper with Darren Ray
Former Mayor of Port Philip Darren Ray is also with us, for a whole hour, as we go Digging Deeper into his life and work.

Save the VCA with Julia Zemiro

Julia Zemiro - smh

The big issue in town right now is the apparent dismantling of Melbourne’s own ‘Fame’ school, modelled on the Julliard in New York, the Victorian College of the Arts. Since being taken over by the University of Melbourne changes have been proposed that would turn it from a performing arts college to an academic university department, which rather misses the point.

A week of student action to try to save the college culminates on Friday. Former student Julia Zemiro of SBS Rockwiz joins us to explain why it’s important to save the VCA, with the help of two of the students, Tom Barton, studying Drama, and, Justin Olstein Film & TV.

I also invited the Dean of the VCA Sharman Pretty, but so far I’m still waiting for a reply.
