FRESHLY DOUG THURSDAY APRIL 29
Daniel Witthaus goes solo in rough territory, the culture wars get worse in the USA, a gay painter takes on the Pope, and despite being denied a Charter, Australia celebrates Human Rights.
INTO THE RED DUST
Daniel Witthaus as his anti-homophobia tour hits Geraldton, which sounds like a pretty rough place – in 2006 the police decided to tackle the high rate of burglaries by bringing back mounted police. Not sure how that worked, but I’m sure the horses were happy. Follow Daniel here
UNIFORMS & CHAINS @ THE WHITE HOUSE
Dramatic developments in the US as gay servicemen and women lose patience with Barack Obama and chain themselves to the White House fence – it appears that ‘yes, we can, but not yet’ is the new catchcry. They are frustrated with Obamas refusal to use his executive powers to end Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. Our Washington correspondent Harley Dennett has the story.
PRAY THE DEVIL TO HELL
Melbourne is a city of festivals and Friday night sees the start of the Human Rights Arts & Film Festival, with a screening of Pray The Devil Back to Hell, Really Long Link . Events are also taking place around Australia. Director Matthew Benetti will be in the studio.
A SAINT WITH A CONDOM
It’s a fair bet the Pope won’t be calling on Ross Watson to paint any chapels any time soon. Fresh from painting Matthew Mitcham he’s been busy turning porn star Francois Sagat – you know, the short guy with the tattooed head - into Saint Peter. He tells us why he has ventured into territory some might think verges on blasphemy. Check it out
THE REGULARS
And we’ll have our regular roundup of news from Andrew Potts from Sydney Star Observer, and our weekly visit to the theatre with Will Conyers.
