Current Affairs - The opinions of a grumpy old pouf

Doug Pollard is a veteran gay journalist, columnist, commentator, and broadcaster specialising in GLBTI issues, based in Melbourne Australia. He often works with Rob Mitchell of the RJM Trust, "We are separate independent and unaffiliated guerilla campaigners and advocates, and the best of mates: nimble, fast-moving, unconventional and above all aiming to drive rapid change", he says.

Petrol Price Surprise

I have to admit that I got a cold shock yesterday afternoon, I had to go out for an appointment in Newcastle at about 2:30pm yesterday and there's a petrol station on the main road near where I live and I had a good look at the price of unleaded petrol as I went past on the bus, it was 129.9, so imagine my surprise when at just after 5pm yesterday evening, I walked past this same petrol station on my way home to discover that unleaded petrol was now 141.9, which got me to thinking that there was major drama in some oil producing country in the world (that was the only reason I could think of for the price of unleaded petrol being so high) so I rushed home and turned on the news only to find out that there was no major drama in the world and that everyone was fine as it was when I left for my appointment in Newcastle earlier this afternoon. I honestly couldn't believe that within two hours that petrol had gone up 11 cents, it seemed like an absolute rip off (Petrol is one reason why I won't be driving a car...too expensive)

It seems like everyone's tax cut money is going into refueling their cars and families are unable to go out for a drive or a picnic on weekends because they can't afford the cost of petrol. I honestly think that ACCC should be given more teeth to investigate but as soon as they do, all the big multinational petrol companies bring down their prices to what they should be instead of 141.9. What are your thoughts?
