Current Affairs - The opinions of a grumpy old pouf

Doug Pollard is a veteran gay journalist, columnist, commentator, and broadcaster specialising in GLBTI issues, based in Melbourne Australia. He often works with Rob Mitchell of the RJM Trust, "We are separate independent and unaffiliated guerilla campaigners and advocates, and the best of mates: nimble, fast-moving, unconventional and above all aiming to drive rapid change", he says.

End Game at ALSO?

ALSO CEO Crusader Hillis has notified members that meetings are proceeding this week with legal, insolvency and accounting personnel over the future of Also Foundation and Also Care.

At a Special General Meeting of members two weeks ago, a motion to allow the Foundation to access $500k of AlsoCare funds was defeated, with 52 voting NO to 37 voting YES.

17 of the YES voters were Foundation employees and Directors.

As a result the NO voters believe they have a mandate to retain all funds in Also Care, and to fully participate in all discussions and decisions about the future of Also Foundation and Also Care going forward.

They are demanding that the defeated management and Board of the Foundation should only take action with their involvement and agreement.

They are insisting that a representative of the No voters should attend all meetings regarding the future of Also Care, and that all minutes and decisions of such meetings should be made immediately available to all members.

They do not believe Also Care should be placed in administration, claiming that it remains a viable entity with funds that can be released for its own purposes, but not to pay the debts of the Also Foundation.

They say any attempt to use Also Care funds to pay off debts of the Foundation will be strongly resisted and have briefed lawyers to take immediate action to block such a move, in the event that any such action is attempted.

Confrontation can still be avoided, however, if Hillis and his team agree to sit down and hammer out a way forward with representatives of the majority voters, who point out they have a much more representative mandate than the Committee to decide the future of the organisations.
