Castro hands power over to Brother
Fidel Castro, President of Cuba has temporarily handed over power of the one-party socialist republic to his brother, Raul Castro after undergoing surgery on Monday. Castro, who has held power in Cuba since the 1959 revolution, has sighted stress as the cause of his recent medical issues in a statement that was broadcast over radio and television by his personal secretary, Carlos Valenciaga.
"Working day and night and barely sleeping has taken its toll on my health, which has withstood everything, has undergone extreme stress and has become brittle," he said in the statement, "that touched off an acute intestinal distress with sustained bleeding, which forced me to undergo delicate surgery."
Castro has been in power in Cuba for the past 47 years, and while he has had previous health issues, particularly with a fall in 2004, this will be the first instance of a temporary and conditional transference of power.
