Current Affairs - The opinions of a grumpy old pouf

Doug Pollard is a veteran gay journalist, columnist, commentator, and broadcaster specialising in GLBTI issues, based in Melbourne Australia. He often works with Rob Mitchell of the RJM Trust, "We are separate independent and unaffiliated guerilla campaigners and advocates, and the best of mates: nimble, fast-moving, unconventional and above all aiming to drive rapid change", he says.

This is a dead parrot

Remember the Python parrot sketch? Remind you of anything? For Norwegian Blue Parrot, read Alternative Lifestyle Organisation.

It too is deceased.

Life support has been switched off: but the rump of the organisation and management keep insisting it's 'only resting.'

I know a dead parrot when I see one, and this is a dead parrot. No amount of shaking the cage and bellowing in its ear is going to bring it back to life.

"We need to think about the whole idea from scratch. The whole thing s a strange relic from the past, and we'll be better off without it in my opinion. It's only dragged on this long, BECAUSE of the money."

ALSO is old tech, a rotary dial in a world of iPhones.

"I would be very happy to volunteer to support a transition to a volunteer organisation. I have considerable experience in working with and revitalising failing community organisations. I'm not sure to whom I should make an offer. Any thoughts?"

With you on that one. mate, but don't expect a warm welcome from the denialists, At least, not yet.

Sure, fixing up the mess will be painful: the relatives who were living in the ALSO house have to be found new homes: that process has begun, but is being blocked by the tiny minority of people still in denial.

I say again, the Foundation is dead, everyone needs to accept that and move on. There is a lot of work to be done to salvage what can be salvaged, including the Benevolent Society, but that will not be achieved by insisting the zombie tottering around the 8th floor of the City Village is really alive.

"Put it into administration. As my partner, who is a CPA says, what else do you do?"

The Foundation is insolvent: it cannot continue. End of story. It needs to be wound up in a dignified, orderly and transparent manner, and the way that is done is by placing it immediately into administration.

And then we can all come together and build a new organisation for the 21st century. We're not Alternative any more, people.

A tale of two cultures

Barry Cohen
Barry Cohen thinks I'm no better than a paedophile

Two guys drop into a pub for a drink. It’s their first date. They’re getting along fine. They exchange a kiss or two. Then suddenly, people are telling them to either stop, or get out. They refuse. They’re bundled out the door. Heterosexual patrons who protest are bundled out too

ALSO President Jarred Hassell
ALSO President Jarred Hassell
More news today about the state of the ALSO Care & Benevolent Society and ALSO Foundation. Unanswered questions over whether the organisation may have already accessed the legacies without prior authorisation.

David Owen, a lawyer and Board member, explains on Saturday Magazine today on Joy 94.9FM why some bequests should not be used for general purposes, even though the wishes of the legatees may not be legally binding

Screaming Jesus

Sex at 2,000 is painful!

Sometimes you just can’t maintain the cynicism. Right after I rolled my eyes at a piece of US research claiming Catholics were hot for same-sex marriage, I was brought up short by news that St Columban’s Catholic College in Caboolture had banned a lecture by one of the ‘pray away the gay’ brigade.
