Current Affairs - The opinions of a grumpy old pouf

Doug Pollard is a veteran gay journalist, columnist, commentator, and broadcaster specialising in GLBTI issues, based in Melbourne Australia. He often works with Rob Mitchell of the RJM Trust, "We are separate independent and unaffiliated guerilla campaigners and advocates, and the best of mates: nimble, fast-moving, unconventional and above all aiming to drive rapid change", he says.

Freshly Doug’s Christmas Cracker

Doug Pollard
This was taken before the years at the mike wiped the smile off my face and turned my beard white!!

My last show of 2010 and in fact the last Freshly Doug until April.

Because I’m taking a break over the summer - except of course for Midsumma and Pride. I wouldn't miss those!!.

This week I’ll be looking back over the last year with a host of our regular correspondents from around Australia and the world.

Keeping me company in the studio, Rod Swift, Rob Mitchell and Tim Newton will all be along to join in the festivities.

Looking back with me over 2010 and voicing their hopes for 2011 will be Corey Irlam, Harley Dennett, Daniel Witthaus, Andrew Potts and Clem Newton-Brown.

Join me for the final Freshly Doug on Joy 94.9 Thursday 23rd 9am - Noon.

The Last Socialist in Australia

Stephen Jolly Socialist Yarra

This weeks guest on Digging Deeper isn't gay but he is the only openly Socialist elected politician in Australia, as far as I'm aware. Nowadays Stephen Jolly is a councillor in Yarra, but in his time he's trained black South African trade unionists during apartheid, and was there in Tiananmen Square when the People's Army moved in.

Help This Way Out

Freshly Doug occasionally runs items taken from US gay radio show This Way Out. Like Joy 94.9, they operate on a shoestring, and like Joy, they are often desperate for funds. So please at this Christmas time consider becoming a financial supporter. Here is the appeal from the program makers.

The Strange Tale of WikiLeaks whistleblower Private Bradley Manning

Bradley Manning
Bradley Manning at a Gay Pride march

DOUG: We’ve been hearing an awful lot about Wikileaks and Julian Assange, the head honcho there at Wikileaks; what we haven’t heard so much about is where all the stuff Wikileaks is leaking, came from. It is alleged – nothing has been proved, so far – to have come from a US Private First Class called: Bradley Manning. Joining us on the line to tell us a bit more about that is our Washington correspondent: Harley Dennett. Good morning Harley

HIV & Ageing in New York

DOUG: The new Baillieu government here in Victoria has pledged AU$200,000 for research into HIV and Ageing – accelerated ageing due to HIV or maybe the drugs or a combination of the two. We’re not entirely sure; is a problem world-wide but a recent report put together by the Gay Men’s Health Crisis in New York is providing a springboard for action, there. US gay radio programme: This Way, Out. Sent their reporter, Sheri Lunn to talk with Gay Men’s Health Crisis [executive] director Sean Cahill. In his New York office

Harley Dennett on Sarah Palin & DADT

Sarah Palin

DOUG: Now bizarre as it may seem, the front runner for the Republican presidential nomination next time out is. . . . somebody called: Sarah Palin. Whom you may or may not have heard of; her credentials for the job were on display last week when her daughter Willow started slinging the word “faggot” on Facebook. The hockey-mum sprang to her defence. Joining me on the line now is our Washington correspondent: Harley Dennett. How did that one play-out over there, Harley?
