Current Affairs - The opinions of a grumpy old pouf

Doug Pollard is a veteran gay journalist, columnist, commentator, and broadcaster specialising in GLBTI issues, based in Melbourne Australia. He often works with Rob Mitchell of the RJM Trust, "We are separate independent and unaffiliated guerilla campaigners and advocates, and the best of mates: nimble, fast-moving, unconventional and above all aiming to drive rapid change", he says.

Current Affairs - October 2010

Show Producer Wanted

Are you a Joy Melbourne member with a fierce interest in GLBTI news and current affairs, a creative imagination, loads of confidence, a great telephone manner? Have you already undergone volunteer training at Joy?

I'm looking for a volunteer producer to work closely with me on Freshly Doug. This is strictly an off-air role.

You will need to be able to offer a minimum of 10 hours per week volunteer time Mon - Wed, plus 5 hrs every Thursday from 8am-1pm at the Joy studios. And all for nothing, so you must be dedicated!

You will also need a mobile phone and internet access.

The job entails working under my direction as follows:

a) Keeping an eye out for stories we ought to cover, by monitoring GLBTI newsgroups, papers, websites etc, and making suggestions to me based on that background knowledge.

b) Tracking down contact details of appropriate spokespersons / interviewees if not already known, getting in touch with them, checking that they are indeed suitable radio talent, i.e., capable and confident speakers, available at the appropriate times etc.

c) Persuading them to appear on the show

You will need to be polite, persistent and persuasive in the face of indifference and knockbacks, confident dealing with people at all levels, up to and including government ministers, senior businesspeople, clergy, community figures etc., quick-thinking and adaptable. Bucketloads of charm a definite plus!

Most important qualification of all is the ability to remain cheerful and focussed under tight deadlines and get along famously with demanding and sometimes grumpy old me .
