Petrol Price Surprise

I have to admit that I got a cold shock yesterday afternoon, I had to go out for an appointment in Newcastle at about 2:30pm yesterday and there's a petrol station on the main road near where I live and I had a good look at the price of unleaded petrol as I went past on the bus, it was 129.9, so imagine my surprise when at just after 5pm yesterday evening, I walked past this same petrol station on my way home to discover that unleaded petrol was now 141.9, which got me to thinking that there was major drama in some oil producing country in the world (that was the only reason I could think of for the price of unleaded petrol being so high) so I rushed home and turned on the news only to find out that there was no major drama in the world and that everyone was fine as it was when I left for my appointment in Newcastle earlier this afternoon. I honestly couldn't believe that within two hours that petrol had gone up 11 cents, it seemed like an absolute rip off (Petrol is one reason why I won't be driving a car...too expensive)

It seems like everyone's tax cut money is going into refueling their cars and families are unable to go out for a drive or a picnic on weekends because they can't afford the cost of petrol. I honestly think that ACCC should be given more teeth to investigate but as soon as they do, all the big multinational petrol companies bring down their prices to what they should be instead of 141.9. What are your thoughts?

A Real Zimbabwe Headache

Surely there must be some world wide concern over a decision to allow Zimbabwe to chair The UN Sustainable Development Council following a vote conducted by the UN this morning, apparently all the African nations got behind the push for Zimbabwe to chair the group which seems to me to be sending a message to the world that says "We think what Mugabe is doing to Zimbabwe is okay". I think the Australian government are kidding themselves when they say that Southern Africa must do something about the moron president in Zimbabwe because they have made it pretty clear that they won't do anything

Added to this is the headache of whether the Australian cricket team will tour the strife racked country. I have found a report on the Sydney Morning Herald website from one of the not many independent reporters in Zimbabwe, Steve Price

Stop Blaming Subculture for Youth Suicide

The subculture of emo is used by many of today's teenagers as way of not only expressing themselves but forming their own unique idea of their own identity, usually through a brand of clothing or through a genre of music however emo is in the spotlight for an altogether disturbing reason, just recently two teenage girls from Melbourne, who were believed to have been 'emos', committed suicide, since then claims have been made by certain sections of the media that emo is somehow to blame for teenagers cutting themselves on purpose or committing suicide in some extreme cases.

To blame a subculture for youth suicide is far too easy and in reality is really just covering up the real problem which of course is depression. Many teenagers who don't consider themselves as being emo, have depression and probably at some point, have considered suicide as a way of escaping their problems and don't try to talk to others about it because they percieve that no one understands what they are going through therefore not seeking out a family member, friend or a form of counselling to talk to about their worries, however there is no link to 'emo' in many cases and that what is really going on is that the person involved is suffering from depression.
