NSW Election Round Up: Another 4 years of incompetence

So Morris Iemma and the Labor party win another term in government in New South Wales but one get's the feeling that the people of New South Wales did this reluctantly as the other option (Peter Debnam's Liberal/National Coalition) weren't really much of an alternative. To me, it was like choosing between a 12 year old shonky government and an even shonkier opposition, that's how bad things are in New South Wales politics at the moment. One thing was notable about the results in many seats, the percentage margins in many seats have closed right up and many seats like Newcastle, Goulburn etc have now become quite marginal seats. Just quickly, it looks like the LAbor candidate as won Newcastle but it will depend on preferences and absentee votes in the next couple of days.
All in all, it has been the most dreary election campaign I have ever seen, there has been nothing memorable about it (except maybe 'Speedogate') and I am glad it is over.
Just a word of warning for Mr Iemma: Don't take this for granted, you will lose plenty of seats at the next election should you take for granted this one last chance to fix the problems that NSW has and stop saying that Workchoices was the reason for your win, the reason for your win was because Labor seemed the lesser evil to most people (I didn't vote Labor but that's just a guess). All the same incompetent ministers got back in, you know, Michael Costa, "Lord Mayor of NSW" Frank Sartor, and Joe Tripodi....be prepared for another 4 years of incompetence, people of NSW, but we deserve it if we vote for some of these clowns.
It now seems certain the Snowy Hydro scheme (NSW's part) will be sold and the rail line into Newcastle will be removed...thanks to the fact that Labor have been incompetent but the Liberals have run a disorganised and bumbling campaign with the leader, Peter Debnam being at the centre of ridicule for wearing his speedos in public, he didn't exactly paste himself in the best light even with the Labor Party attacks on him.

The controversial Lane Cove tunnel will be opened today by three workers who worked on the new tunnel, Premier Iemma and Roads Minister, Eric Roozendaal declined invitations to attend the opening. Families who live arround the tunnel, say there is no filtration and the effects of car exhaust could be felt by children in the area and complain that they have to drive around the block twice just to get home.

Should the Australian Cricket Team go to Zimbabwe?

The Australian Cricket team's tour of Zimbabwe is in doubt after there were calls from Federal Labor and the Greens to cancel the tour because of the political violence that has taken over Zimbabwe in the last couple of weeks.
Members of Zimbabwe's opposition (Movement for Democratic Change) have bashed and refused travel for medical treatment by the Zimbabwe government. Factional leader of the MDC, Arthur Mutambara was even re arrested yesterday along with at 10 other democracy activists, including former Australian, Sekai Holland. Zimbabwe President and Tyrant, Robert Mugabe has told critics of his government that they could 'go hang' and has even said he would expell any foreign diplomat critical of him or his government out of the country.
Australian Prime Minister, John Howard has said he would look at tightening sanctions against the Zimbabwe government but made no mention of Australia's cricket tour to Zimbabwe later this year.

Downer condemns Mugabe

Australia's Foreign Affairs minister, Alexander Downer has condemned the violence in Zimbabwe on Sunday which saw leaders of Zimbabwe's main opposition party beaten and arrested by riot police but it is believed that severe beatings have left one of the leaders of the Movement for Democratic change needing surgery to fix wounds to his face. Around 140 people are in jail after the crackdown on anti government protests was ordered by President, Robert Mugabe who said that the protesters were in breach of a three month ban on political activism (When has there not been a ban on political activism in Zimbabwe?)

Mr Downer called on the government to release the activists from jail and implement economic and social reforms. Mugabe has ruled Zimbabwe for well over 27 years and it is suggested that because of factors like the state of the Zimbabwe economy that Mugabe and the ZANU - PF are losing grip on the nation

Political Mud Slinging - Please Get Back To The REAL Issues

The Brian Burke scandal has claimed the jobs of three Western Austraklia government ministers and it also the claimed the scalp of Federal Human Services Minister and senator, Ian Campbell over the weekend as the Federal Government continues to sling mud at the Opposition leader, Kevin Rudd about his dealings with the corrupt former West Australian premier.

There is no doubt that Mr Campbell was made to be sacrifical lamb of this whole thing so that the government could continue to attack Mr Rudd over his dealings with this premier, in the hope that the mud they are throwing will stick to the squeaky clean image of the new Opposition Leader, who up till now hasn't put a foot wrong and is seen to be winning over the Australian people which is frustrating the Government to no end but don't think for a second that it is only the Federal Government throwing mud around in the hope that it will stick, the Opposition are also doing their fair share of throwing mud and hoping it will stick as well with Mr Rudd calling for the Government to come clean on Iraq and the number of other issues that he believes that the Government hasn't be honest on.
